Severe Thunderstorm alerts
One thing that I haven't learned to just ignore are all these severe thunderstorm alerts. Right now, we have an alert until 8pm. So what does that mean? Do I not go to the movies? Do I stay in doors to avoid lightning strikes? Living in LA, we may get a lightning/thunderstorm once a year. But that's during the spring time months. Here, it is summer time, I'm in the middle of studying for finals and I'm just staring out the window watching the branches sway back and forth with each gust of wind. The sky is so dark that it feels like it's almost dusk. Oh well, I love a good pouring rain.

Saying "Thank You" to a bad situation
It is such an easy thing to say to a person when one does something good for you. My mother had always taught me to say please and thank you with almost every gesture. And when I was younger it seemed more like a chore or something that HAD to be done. But lately I've been seeing these CitiBank commercials where people are always caught in a bind or conflict with someone, and the simple compliment of Thank You always calms the raging waters of despise that one has for the other. I never really cared for those commercials since it didn't make sense to me. And for what CitiBank was selling...it still didn't make sense. But back to those two words of politeness.
Thank You. As I think about where I am right now in my life, and remember how crappy things were when life didn't go the way I wanted it to be. Whether it was getting a lower letter grade in a class than what I expected, getting passed over on a raise that I rightfully deserved, or a painful breakup...in life, we always tend to look at the bad things at that moment. And sometimes we may do some crazy things to save face or whatever. Like many, I have done a lot in order to save face.
One time in particular was a girl I dated many years ago. She is really smart and beautiful and indirectly made me want to study harder. I didn't want to let her down by being a bum, and I wanted to finish my degree around the same time she would've been done. While in this relationship, I did really well in school. I even aced Pre-Calculus on my first try and was on my way to kick ass in all my school work! Months later, she moved away to start college, and things were changing rapidly. Right before Christmas, we were through. I tried everything, even did a Wonder Years thing (I didn't know at the time) by hanging out in her front lawn, to try to win her back. What an idiot! At that point, I stopped going to school, and started working for a bank and in five years I was making tons of money. And during those five years and making more money than I'd ever thought I could, clues such as job offers, problem solving, and people telling me straight out, that I should go back to school. Well here I am in the midwest in school and following my dream.
I'm not only studying Mathematics at a top notch university, but I am experiencing new cultures, I speak German quite well, in which I never thought I'd do a year ago, let alone 6 years ago. I have seen Amish carriages crossing bridges over the interstate, saw many amazing football games at the famous Horseshoe! I have experienced things such as snow storms and severe thunderstorms, things that I would never witnessed if I was living in the City of Los Angeles. Also, I met a beautiful woman here who with each smile brightens the darkest nights and whose hugs warm any Ohio winter breeze. She is so very understanding and supportive that I feel very blessed. And I thank her each time we speak(she's living back home in Germany now). I'm on my way to finish my degree here and will possibly entering graduate school soon after in pursuit of my doctorate degree. It's so strange where a few years ago I thought my life was over.
This all wouldn't of happened if she never broke up with me. So to you, and you know who you are, I thank you.
